Uranus and Gaia, Antique Sculpture
Stunning Sculpture dating back to the early 20th century, depicting the Greek God Uranus – meaning the starry sky, the heaven – while subduing Gaia – the earth under his feet. on the other side, she is growing with a branch behind his head, exceeding him in height, as an omen of what is about to happen.
In Greek mythology, this was the initial couple of deities, from which were born all the Titans. They were initially held captive by the father that feared being dethronized. When they grew, they ousted and castrated him with the help of the mother. After this fight, they placed Cronos at the head of Olympus.
A second interesting interpretation is that Uranus represented the celestial cults of the Indo-European peoples, while Gaia represented the terrestrial and agricultural cults of the inhabitants of Greece. From their meeting/clash, born new cults, hidden by the established power. The story told from the point of view of the Greeks, sees the triumph of the terrestrial cults with the help of Gaia herself. Later she also vanishes from the mythological tales, leaving the power to the successive dynasties of gods and their descendants.
